Artistic statement about this piece:

“Short King” is a painting about confidence and challenging stereotypes. Inspired by Merlot the rescue pigeon, who is seen  stompin’ and sharing positive affirmations for many viewers all over the world.

I decided to paint this small bird at 4 feet tall to emphasize his charismatic personality, and showcase how beautiful pigeons really are. Pigeons were among the very first domesticated animals, and cherished companions for thousands of years. Using large-scale and detailed realism to create awe and foster curiosity. Challenging our perceptions of this misunderstood and under-appreciated animal.

Short king is a positive term for a man who exudes confidence, charisma, and high self-worth regardless of his shorter height. Often looked down-upon smaller creatures, can still hold such powerful and positive energy. Embracing their own identities, and uplifting those around them.

Imagine strutting confidently like this short king. How it could change the way you see yourself and others. Take a moment to appreciate the smaller things too!

Materials:

Acrylic paint (Golden heavy body acrylic).

Stretched canvas (100% medium weight cotton duck canvas, primed with gesso. Kiln dried 1 1/2 inch thick stretcher bars made of solid wood. Back stapled. Hanging hardware on back with d-ring and wrapped steel wire.)

Archival materials, in order of application: Artist’s loft level 3 canvas, Golden acrylic paint, Golden isolation coat, Gamblin Gamvar satin varnish.
